Caflon® Nonionic Surfactants
Nonionic surfactants are a class of surfactants (surface-active agents) that do not carry an overall ionic charge.

Nonionic surfactants are a class of surfactants (surface-active agents) that do not carry an overall ionic charge.
Unlike anionic or cationic surfactants, which have a net negative or positive charge, respectively, nonionic surfactants are uncharged molecules.
Nonionic surfactants have several key features to remember when selecting a surfactant for your formulation:
Structure: They typically consist of a hydrophilic (water-soluble) head group and a hydrophobic (water-insoluble) tail. The head group is often made up of polyoxyethylene or polyglycoside units, while the tail is usually a long-chain alkyl or alkylphenol group.
Solubility: Nonionic surfactants such as those in Univar's white label line are soluble in both polar and non-polar solvents, making them versatile in various applications.
Applications:
- Detergents and cleaners: They are widely used in household and industrial cleaning products, such as laundry detergents, dish soaps, and hard surface cleaners.
- Personal care products: Found in shampoos, conditioners, and cosmetic formulations.
- Emulsifiers: Used in food, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural products to stabilize emulsions.
- Wetting agents: Improve the wetting and spreading of liquids on solid surfaces.

- Low foaming tendency
- Relatively low toxicity and environmental impact
- Stable over a wide range of pH and temperature
- Good compatibility with other surfactants and additives

APGs (Alkyl Polyglucoside)
APG (Alkyl Polyglucoside) surfactants are a class of nonionic surfactants derived from renewable resources like starch and fatty alcohols. They consist of a hydrophilic head group made from glucose units and a hydrophobic alkyl tail from fatty alcohols. APGs are mild, readily biodegradable, and have good foaming, emulsifying, and wetting properties. They are commonly used in personal care products like shampoos, body washes, and cosmetics, as well as in household and industrial cleaners.

NPEs (Nonylphenol Ethoxylate)
NPE (Nonylphenol Ethoxylate) surfactants are nonionic surfactants synthesized from nonylphenol, which is derived from petroleum sources. They have a hydrophobic nonylphenol tail and a hydrophilic polyoxyethylene head group. NPEs are effective emulsifiers, wetting agents, and defoamers used in various applications like detergents, paints, pesticides, and industrial cleaners. However, there are environmental concerns over the potential estrogenic effects and persistence of nonylphenol, leading to increased regulation and a shift towards more environmentally friendly alternatives like APGs.
